Wooden Travelling Trunk – JL THORPE

1 in stock

This range of vintage suitcases, trunks, lunch, hat and school cases in metal, wood, leather and hardboard are authentic and functional as they are and so we resist recreating them and stock them as collectables!

This wooden trunk was used by Joseph Leslie Thorpe when he emigrated to South Africa in 1949. Before that, it was used by his wife’s sister, Cecilia Mary Reader, who was a nursing Sister (S/R) in Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service during World War II. The words ‘Reader QARNNS S/R’ are still visible under the paint on top of the trunk as Cecilia was sent by QARNNS from the UK to Mombasa, where she nursed soldiers and sailors injured in the campaigns in India and the Far East.
